The Doniphan-Trumbull football team has been on fire this season, led by senior wide receiver Jack Poppe. On October 24, the team brought home another big win, but Poppe was the night’s biggest success story as he ended the night breaking the Class C2 career receptions record.

“I had been keeping an eye on his totals for the last couple of weeks as he started to get within 20. It is a great accomplishment for him. It just shows how consistent he has been since his freshman year,” stated head football coach Mr Jordan Connor. “Because he has been so great for so long, sometimes I think we forget how special he is.”

Poppe broke the Class C2 career receptions record with 228 total receptions. Jackson Hirschfeld of Centennial formerly held the all-state record with 210 total receptions.

He’s had a record-breaking season in addition to the all-state record. Poppe also broke the school’s single-game receiving record, previously held by a former Cardinal. Poppe destroyed it by receiving 17 catches in one game against Ord. This season, he has also surpassed 2,000 career receiving yards, underscoring his consistency and skill as a receiver.

“As far as individual seasons go, this was the best and most accomplished season that I have been a part of. An all-state record speaks for itself, as well as all of the school records that he broke this year. As far as a comparison to other athletes that I have coached, he is the best individual player that I have coached,” offensive coach Mr Tyler Mogilefsky stated. “I was a part of 3 2,000-yard rushing seasons, from Braden Schuppan, Marc Zeckser, and Keithan Stafford. This one was more dominant. I have never seen true 2-1 double teams like that at the high school level, yet he still managed to put up impressive numbers. Great season, even better kid.”

Poppe’s accomplishments have brought pride to the Doniphan-Trumbull community. From breaking school records to encouraging others to give their best effort, he continues to show what it means to be a true Cardinal.

“Breaking the record has been one of my goals from the start of my senior season. Being able to break the record feels amazing, and I thank all of the coaches and players of DT football,” stated Poppe.

While Poppe doesn’t yet know where he plans to attend school next year, he hopes to play football wherever he goes.

“Football is fun, and I’m thankful for everything football has given me in high school, and I’d love to continue playing in college,” said Poppe. “Our Cardinal football team has meant so much to me, and I hope I’ll be able to find another football family next year and beyond.”
