Making a Book Club at Doniphan Trumbull

For Junior High Students

Librarian Mrs. Julie Hendricks noticed that there weren’t as many activities for the junior high students, so she decided that it was time to change that. Hendricks has created a junior high book club that will meet monthly, in the hopes of getting more junior high students interested in school activities and reading.

“I’m really excited to start this book club and be able to help junior high students read more,” said Hendricks.

While the club is just getting off the ground, so far nine students have registered.

The group of ambitious readers will meet once a month during the school day to discuss the book they are reading.

Their first book, title, and author, are about dealing with loss and leaning on the family members who are there for them. Throughout the book club, Hendricks hopes to teach the students how to go through loss. She also wants to show the students that it’s okay to go through loss and how to cope with it.

The group is hoping to read and discuss 4 or 5 books.

This is also an opportunity for the students to read on a casual level. Hendricks wants students to feel comfortable and have fun. Like any other book club, it’s all about community and sharing about the topics without feeling like students have to know every detail.

“I hope this gives everyone a sense of purpose and to create students who become a long-life reader or learner,” said Hendricks.
