The Doniphan-Trumbull girls basketball team played a tough Ravenna team for their first game back from break on Thursday, losing 27-53 and dropping their record to 1-5.
The girls had come off of a very tough win against Central City before they went into the break and were hoping to carry this momentum into the new year.
“I was so excited to be playing again after the break because we didn’t get to have our holiday tournament. The whole team was ready to get the game started,” says sophomore Addie Fay.
In the first quarter junior Sophie Fitch started off the game with two points from her free throws. Throughout the first quarter the Cards got many steals, but in the end they were not able to pull ahead, leaving the score 6-9 after the first eight minutes.
“We came out strong and played good defence, but we struggled on getting our shots to fall. Although we had challenges, we kept fighting,” said Fitch.
The Cards were ready to come back swinging in the second quarter. Sophomore Hannah Greathouse scored the first point in the quarter for the team. Throughout the quarter the girls did not back down, and while they put up a good fight, the team headed into the locker room with a score of 13-30.
“In the first half we struggled on getting into the offense, and many of us were frustrated, and so after half time we knew what we had to do to get ourselves into a groove on the offensive end,” said junior Grace Shultz.
Despite the score, the Lady Cards were not ready to give up. Starting off the third quarter they had a strong defense with many steals and rebounds. On the offensive side, the team was getting a lot of shots away, but few were falling. The girls kept pushing with their tough to get past press. Despite their hard work, the ending score of the third quarter was 19-38.
“Although we weren’t doing the best in the first half, we came out of half time with our heads held high, and we were ready to fight back,” said Greathouse.
The team started the fourth quarter and the first points were made by Fay. They kept working hard to put up shots and get them in, but Ravenna was a very tough opponent. The score then ended at 27-53.
“Even though we worked really hard through the whole game, we just couldn't compete with them. I am still proud of my team for working hard and not giving up,” said senior Madison Shimmin.
