On Sept. 21, the 7-6 Doniphan-Trumbull Cardinal volleyball team traveled south to play a volleyball match against the 7-5 Hastings St. Cecilia Bluehawks. After a tough, hard fight the Cardinals fell to the Bluehawks after getting swept in three sets.

Emily Shimmin, the sophomore setter said, “We started off the match very strong, then started to fall behind and never caught back up.”

The Cardinals fought hard to stay within a few points after trailing the Blue Hawks most of the first set, but it wasn’t enough. The Blue Hawks started to go on a run, and before the Cardinals knew it the score was 15-8 with the Blue Hawks on top. STC led through the first set of the match, and DT ended up losing 16-25.

Sophomore Kaleah Olson said, “We tried our hardest to keep up with the very talented Blue Hawks. We made some good plays, but had a few costly mistakes that gave them a lot of momentum.”

Coming out of the break after the first set, the Cardinals were looking to bounce back and clinch the second set. Unfortunately, the Cardinal’s plan didn’t fall through and they ended up losing the set 14-25.

Sophomore Oliva Hoppe said, “We were struggling and needed to focus on the little things and come together as a team.”

After being down 2 sets to 0, the Cardinals knew they had to dig deep, fight hard and win this last set to stay alive. The Blue Hawks started on a 5-0 run and never looked back from there. The Cardinals tried to keep the game close but the Blue Hawks were so dominant that the Cardinals ran out of gas and ended up losing the third set 13-25.

Although the game didn’t end up how DT would’ve liked, they had some sparks of success against a really good Blue Hawk team. Senior Sophie Fitch led the team in kills with 8, and junior Addie Fay led the team in digs with 13. Senior Kendyl Brummund led the team in serves received 22, while Shimmin led the Cardinals in assists with 19.

The Cardinals are now 7-7 with 6 games left in the season. The team is hoping to win their upcoming games to improve their season win total.
