Cardinals Fall In Season Opener

NPSP To Much For DT

Doniphan-Trumbull started their season off by traveling to North Platte to play the #8 team in C2, North Platte St. Pats. Last year NPSP beat DT 35-12. The Cardinals were looking to get revenge but ended up falling to The Irish 41-6.

Sophomore TE Ben VanDiest says, “I was feeling good going into the game because of the hard work we put in during the summer and fall camps.”

Despite DT’s summer prep, NPSP got out to an early lead, scoring on their first offensive drive and never looked back. DT scored their first and only touchdown of the game midway through the second quarter with sophomore QB Jaden Williams throwing the ball to senior RB Blake Detamore for a 7-yard touchdown.

Williams said, “I thought we put together a great drive and felt that was the spark we needed in the first half.”

DT went into halftime down 28-6, halftime was a little longer because the game had to be delayed by 30 minutes due to lighting, so the teams had more time than usual to make necessary halftime adjustments.

The delay didn’t help the Cardinals. Coming out of halftime DT kicked off to NPSP, and the Irish picked up right where they left off, scoring in the first possession out of halftime. The Cardinals couldn’t get anything to go their way and the Irish scored 13 unanswered points in the second half to win the game 41-6.

Doniphan-Trumbull put up a great fight, but the Cardinals couldn’t get anything to work, and they fell to #8 North Platte St. Pats in their season opener. You can check out the Cardinals’ next football game at home on September 3rd against the Gibbon Buffaloes.
