Following the career of a senior at DT, Madison Shimmin

Basketball is a very competitive and mental sport that many enjoy, but for Madison Shimmin, a senior at DT, basketball means a little bit more.

Shimmin’s career started when she was in fourth grade, where she played for a little kid’s club basketball team through DT.

“I remember being super nervous when I first started playing basketball because I had to play with the girls a year older than me. Once I got to know them, I was always so excited to play,” said Shimmin.

Growing up with basketball in her life, Shimmin has played many positions including being a guard but has claimed a post spot throughout high school.

“I do like post better because I get to rebound a lot more,” says Shimmin.

Shimmin’s 4-year high school basketball career has had many ups and downs. One of her favorite memories was with the old DT basketball coach Mr.Jeff Keasling; after every win, the girls would spray him with their water bottles as they celebrated in the locker room. Making memories like that are a huge reason why players love the sport and bond so much over the season.

“I look forward to making memories with the team even if the season has its ups and downs,” says Shimmin.

Although this season hasn’t been going the way the girls had hoped, Shimmin thinks the girls can turn the season around and start seeing the light at the end of the tunnel.

“I'm hoping we can start seeing an increase in wins as well as improvement in working together as a team to finish the season,” says Shimmin.

Throughout Shimmin’s basketball career she has accomplished many achievements.

Her career rebounds are 158 with 73 being offensive and 85 being defensive. Shimmin has scored a total of 53 points and earned 23 assists.

Shimmin said, “I'm doing really well on rebounds because I get my girl boxed out, and I go for every ball even if it's Sophie and I fighting for it,” says Shimmin.

Shimmin doesn’t plan on playing collegiate basketball but will always have a true love for the sport. DT has taught her everything she knows about basketball, and she will truly miss the memories and lessons it has taught her.

“I'm really sad our basketball season is coming to an end because I am going to miss playing with my friends and having practiced with them every day. Basketball has been a huge part of my life for so long and I will always have a love for it,” says Shimmin.
