Literacy at Doniphan-Trumbull

Doniphan-Trumbull Public School Definitions of Literacy


Mathematics Literacy is an understanding of basic skills; using creativity and application in problem solving; and attaining high-level critical thinking skills.

Scientific Literacy is student demonstration of:

  • Process Understanding (comprehension) -- interpretation, 5 W's, Scientific Method, results, sharing, math, relationships
  • Communication -- technology use, projects, labs, assessments, tests, handouts, reports, posters, understanding and learning from mistakes
  • Problem Solving -- thinking outside the box, self-directed, technology applications, curiosity
  • Inquiry Application -- labs, hands-on, risks, learning from mistakes, projects, technology use, assessments

Fine Arts Literacy is:

  • being aware of and showing appreciation for the fine and performing arts in a multicultural society.
  • taking a risk; being willing to make and learn from mistakes while creating something new and genuinely original.
  • having an open mind to other customs, values, and beliefs.
  • using technology to enhance the fine arts.
  • being able to use the arts to express feelings and communicate with others.


Vocational Education Literacy is student demonstration of:

  • a growth mindset.
  • interpersonal skills.
  • personal responsibility.
  • collaboration with others.
  • productivity.
  • economic awareness.
  • technology literacy and application.
  • self-motivation and direction.
  • problem solving skills.
  • personal effectiveness.
  • real-world application of academics.


Social Studies and Language Arts Literacy is: 

  • comprehension of different types of text.
  • analyzing, responding to, and evaluating information.
  • selecting an appropriate means of communication.
  • communicating an idea concisely and effectively.


Literacy in the Elementary is student acquisition and use of knowledge and skills using a wide range of 21st Century technologies to problem solve and communicate actively, efficiently, and effectively as a productive member, both cooperatively and independently, in today's world.
