New Virus Alert

January 14, 2010

For PC/Windows Users...

We’re starting to see some emails arriving with a subject line and/or
message concerning “a random act of kindness” and a link for you to click,
which is in no way connected to kindness whatsoever.  This link installs 2
Trojans on your computer and *will* trash the operating system.  After the
Trojans are installed, your background will change to a screen that looks
like Windows Explorer and inform you your machine is infected with this or
that and to pay for the software to remove it.  By the time you see that
new background, it’s too late.

The Trojans get permission to trash your computer when you click the link,
which is why these programs are able to get around anti-virus software.
The couple we’ve seen so far not only trashes Windows, but also renders
any anti-virus software inoperable.  After the Trojans take off, messages
are sent out to everyone in your address book, which will infect their
computers and the vicious cycle continues.

If you see ANY message referencing a “random act of kindness” be extremely
leery and delete it without opening or clicking on the link, even if you
know who it is from.
